Many Mercer Islanders do not realize that our energy, which comes to us via PSE, is less "clean" than that in Seattle. Fully 1/3 of the power that flows to our homes comes from a coal-burning plant in Montana. Another 1/3 comes from burning natural gas, leaving only 1/3 from carbon-free sources, mainly hydroelectric.

Our campaign is just getting started. Join us February 6 at 7 p.m. at the Mercer Island Congregational Church, 4545 Island Crest Way, for a strategic planning meeting. We hope to get up and running fast, obtaining concrete results quickly.

Our ultimate goals are as follows:

  • Mercer Island will call on its utility, Puget Sound Energy (PSE), to transition off fossil fuels on an expedited timeline; and

  • All Mercer Island operations (not just municipal) will be powered by 100% renewable electricity by 2035.
