What is Sustainable M.I.?

We are a group of Mercer Islanders, including island residents, students, City Council members, and city staff, who together explore how to support and accelerate the City of Mercer Island's sustainability program. Sustainable M.I. seeks to protect ecosystem integrity while helping to make a vibrant local economy possible, with energy needs met by renewable sources. We conduct a Google discussion group and in-person meetings as well.

In January, Sustainable M.I. submitted a letter to the City Council as they prepared for their annual planning session (January 26 and 27, 2018). The letter called on the council to make sustainability not just one of the five or six priorities they set during their planning for the year, but a central organizing framework to guide all city planning. The letter proposed the council consider adopting the STAR community rating system, a framework for setting goals, tracking accomplishments, and reporting to citizens on the city's progress towards a more sustainable future.

Update: At and following the planning session, the City Council decided to make sustainability one of their priorities. Details to follow. In the meantime, we are still collecting signatures. Help us show the City Council that prioritizing sustainability has broad support on Mercer Island.

We firmly believe that environmental issues cannot be addressed without extensive public participation, but people need to be informed before they can get involved.
